Reef Damage
(February 9,2003)

On 02/09/03, Vone Research Inc. continued monitoring the coral restoration project. Thanks to Steve Higgins and David Stout we now have the map datum. We dove area# 22. This area is vast. In the sections of area# 22 that we dove we noticed that all the hard corals have been stablized. The method of attaching sponges with cement seems to be working well. We saw six sponges that look like they may survive. We also found a large barrel sponge with hard coral at its base that had broken free from the wire attachment. The sponge is still in good condition and probably will survive if it is stabilized. There is a large deposit of soft corals piled in one of the gaps in the reef on the south east side of area # 22. These soft corals still can be salvaged. We would like to know the extent of the damage to the areas not affected by the dredging project. This information is not in any of the reports we have so far. Our intent is to apply for permits and repair these areas as quickly as possible. We would appreciate CSI releasing this information to Vone Research Inc.so that we can begin assessing the areas.
