Reef Damage
(February 23,2003)

On 02/23/03 Vone Research continued it's monitoring of the coral restoration project. We dove site # 37. This is the first time we are reporting on this area. It is located on the inside of the third reef just north of the outfall trench in 57 feet of water. The hard corals that have been attached in this area are showing more signs of stress and bleaching than in any other site we have seen to date. The bleached corals were visible from just below the surface. We found one barrel sponge that been stabilized and was doing well. There was one other barrel sponge that looked like it could be saved if it were stabilized. There are approximately 10 hard corals not yet stabilized. Several are not marked. Two have not been turned over yet. We counted approximately 20 soft corals not yet attached. It is too late for some of soft corals.
