Reef Damage
On 03/23/03, Vone Research continued monitoring the coral restoration project.
We first dove area #27. Little work has been done here. Nothing has been
stabilized and several hard corals are still upside down. This area is small
in comparison with other areas. The only thing different from the last time we
dove this area on 03/01/03 is that now some of the hard corals are nearly
dead. It would not take much for a diver to over turn and mark the hard
corals. My guess is it could be done easily by one diver in one dive. Our
hands are tied, so will simply recorde the reef as it dies. Next we dove site
# 37. The stabilized corals in this area are doing ok. There are a lot of hard
coals that have not been stabilized in this area nor are they marked. It is
possible that local recreational divers have been turning over these corals
since this was a very popular reef. It is obvious there were multiple cable
drags here . One section of this reef has been scraped nearly clean. This once
beautiful reef probably will not be the same in our lifetime. Three of the
reefs that have been destroyed in this in environmental disaster were some of
the best in Broward County.
